Can an employer make employees pay company fines?

I work at an audio house and we had a Saturday recording session scheduled with one of our bigger talents. The recording engineer had a family emergency and ended up at the hospital with his baby and had his cell phone turned off. When the operations manager called him to see where he was he kept getting voicemail. The engineer was a no show for the session and the talent's agent charged the company a $5000 cancellation fee. Now the owner of the company is making the operations manager and the engineer pay $2500 and $1250 respectively. Is this legal? They both are paying for fear of losing their jobs.

Can the employer make them pay? Sounds like the threat of losing a job did the trick. Not all employers are understanding.

If he has the right to fire them, then asking them to pay to the company is legal. If he is pocketing the money himself, OR if they have a union contract stating that they cannot be fired, then it might be illegal.
