Upgrading laptop HDD. I am trying to use my old HDD as an external within a casing. (PC World)?

New found hardware, found, installed etc but my laptop will not reconise it. I did the "Disc management" and it eventually appeared, but still no access. I ran Paragon partition manager, which shows it as Basic Hard Drive 1 (HTS54104 0G9AT00 USB Device.) My new installed HDD shows as Basic Hard Drive 0 (HTS54108 0G9AT00. I have not done anything to the old drive. Do I need to format or anything else? It still contains operating system etc. My programs and files are all backed up. All help greatly received. I have moved jumpers on 3.5 in HDD before. I cant seem to find any on my 2.5 in laptop HDD

I have 3 Dell Notebook PCs and 3 Desktops (Dell, Gateway and Sony). I did something similar to what you have done but with an older 3.5" hard drive (40GB) from a Pentium II Desktop I salvaged certain parts like the hard drive, AGP video card etc. I am not a technie but have done a fair share of PC Notebook upgrades... no you should not have to do anything it maybe that that the chipset in the casing is dicey if the drive is insalledwith input select set as generally there are three options on the drive that should solve this. you do not have to reformat or anything.
