About to have back surgery what can I expect?

I was in a car accident a little over a year ago, I had a pre existing back problem that was retriggered, I have been through physical therapy, injections and a back brace. My orthopedic specialist informed me that surgery would be my best option. I am alittle apprehensive, but I am tired of being in pain. Can anyone tell me what to expect after surgery? What kind of lawsuit do I have? I was rear-ended on my way home from work in a construction zone.

"back surgery" is pretty vague. Is he talking about a spinal fusion? I had one of those in my neck in 95 (same procedure, just different area). I'd be happy to share my experience with you if that's what it is.
