Why do we still have fingernails and toenails?

Bearing in mind that evolution has been proven why therefore do we still have nails on our fingers and toes if they were originally used as, say, talons to subdue and kill prey ?. We haven't needed them for for that purpose for centuries or even millenia.

Well I don't know about you but my nails still do a stand-up job protecting my fingers and toes from severe injury. I've swung a hammer a time or two in my life, and I'd much rather get a purple bruise under my nail than a broken phalange.

We were hunting only 50 or so generations ago and it takes way longer than that for evolution to change. If they still fulfil a purpose, albeit different to the original purpose, they won;t necessarily fade away.

Not so long ago, my monthly debts exceeded my income. As it happens, i got my act together and sorted myself out. But for a long time, i was hanging on by my finger nails! During this period, i consoled my self, clipping my toe nails. Try and imagine where i would be without them! Hope ive hit it on the nail. Have a... More

Darling, without those little versatile companions, our fingers will be rendered useless and find it impossible to hit the computer keys... Yeah they harden the tip of fingers so that many works can be completed and done with.

sister only those things are changed in evolution which have no use.Since the nails have many uses like protection they do not change over the period of time.

in addition I find the finger nails help a lot in scratching. Either my head, mosquito bites, or somebodies face if they annoy me (OK, I only do that that figuratively, but if the need ever arrises literally, they will be there). And they can help you open boxes by getting into cracks your fingers can't get a grip on.

In addition to what everyone else has said about fingernails still being very useful, they may even partially remain because of sexual selection. How many women do you know who paint their finger nails and toe nails? Maybe men prefer women who do that?

Unless there is an evolutionary advantage in losing our nails why should we?
