Volvo does make some of the safest cars. But a lot of people don't realize that Mercedes-Benz has actually invented, pioneered or been first to introduce more safety features than Volvo. Yeah, but there not the best looking either. I wouldn't buy one until I was like in my 50s and even then I would consider others.

THEY ARE ONE OF THE SAFEST BUT NOT THE MOST RELIABLE AND THEY ARE VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR PLUS THEIR SCHEDULE MAINTENANCE THAT IS REQUIRED FOR THE WARRANTY PROTECTION WILL KEEP YOU IN THE POOR HOUSE.

Actually Honda has more cars in the list by "Institute for Highway Safety". Here's the list: http://www.iihs.org/news/rss/pr111507.html Volvo is the choice of many Yuppies, but, upkeep is very expensive and its a very homely vehicle.

You asked about it being one of the safest, not whether it was reliable or good looking. Volvo prides themselves on safety. In regard to their appearance, the comments made by some others here obviously show they have not looked at the current models. The old versions were "boxy" looking but quite stout.

Though I would say there are some driving aspects of the car that make driving a little more of a challenge, ex. little feedback from brake pedal, average... More
