Does anyone know how to rip jeans effectively, similar to the quality at major brands?

Ok, I am a jean lover, especially ripped jeans, and i want to know, how can i rip jeans without buying them for $50 and up? I heard sharp sandpaper can do the job, as well as scissors somehow. If anyone can give me an answer as well as a detailed procedure, I will be soooo happy! Thanks!

Olfa blade or single-edge razor blade would work; put the jeans on and mark "where" with chalk. Be sure and put some heavy cardboard inside the leg so you do not inadvertantly cut through both layers.

I did it back in the eighties..The height of ripped jeans couture! LOL I would use scissors, paint the edges of the cuts with bleach and wash with hot water twice...Always seemed to look right.
