I am a waiter and I work very hard for my tip. Why do people expect a tip everywhere you go?

How come mailcarriers, garbage collectors, and coffee shop employees expect a tip for christmas? They do make a higher per hour wage, where as service industry people make $2.13 per hour and most have to tip out the host staff, backwaiters, and bartenders. When we don't get a tip we are still paying other employees. It's as if we paid to wait on a table. Help me understand, why certain people expect tips?

Well being in a ex-waiter it is a very simple question to answer. You provide a service so do mailcarrirers, garbage collectors and everyone you mentioned above. So they dont expect a tip but something that shows you appreciate what they do for you, it doesnt have to be money. It can be a card or chocolates or some... More

Just because they can, otherwise they wouldn't expect anything. I think you should have to work for tips but I also think waiters wand waitress need to be tipped at least 10% no matter what unless they were rude.

I understand your pain. I've been a waitress many, many times. My biggest pet peeve is Starbucks. I'm paying $5 for a drink and you think you deserve a tip?! All you did was make a drink and overcharge me for it.

That's a great question. Every time I go into Starbucks I never tip. Tips are for people making below minimum wage. I know $8 an hour, or whatever the baristas make isn't a ton of money, but come on, all they did was turn around and get me a cup of coffee. That's what they are paid the $8 an hour for. Why would I give... More

I agree with you, it has become crazy. In the restaurant industry we all know that the wait staff don't get paid a living wage by the management and that the tip is expected as their re-numeration. This applies in the US, but not in other countries where the wait staff is paid by management, so smaller tips are A-OK in... More

im a waitress so i know exactly how you feel. the closest i can think is that at the end of the year they expect to be rewarded by everyone they come in contact with during the holidays. they often forget that waiters and waitresses are always tipping out and dont get paid as much as we do. and there are always those... While they may make a higher base wage than you, mail carriers and garbage collectors still work very hard. It is just a polite way of acknowledging that you appreciate their hard work. Giving to them does not take away from you, so I'm not sure why you are upset about other people being treated nicely.
