How else can a middle-aged number cruncher/engineer find a job?

Please don't reply with the popular job board links and headhunters! I have tried so many of them already. Seems age IS a factor, although employers deny that. In the Providenct to Boston area, I am looking for an opportunity to use my experience, problem solving/data/analytical skills. All I need is a chance to do that.
