Why not be a nurse instead of a doctor?

Why is it that when people consider careers in the healthcare sector, they would aspire to be a doctor instead of a nurse? Both help and heal patients so in a way the career satisfaction reaped for both jobs are similar. Is it just for the higher pay and status or are there other reasons?
