How did the French and Indian War change the relationship between Britain and its colonies in America?

Okay so I wrote my DBQ for this question and didn't do a very good job...I got a 4. My teacher says I focused too much on independence. I didn't talk about the whole salutary neglect and mercantilism thing, or the colonies' conflict with the French because I didn't quite get it. Can anyone explain that part to me? Thanks so much!!

The French were the enemy of the British for centuries- natural competitors. After the F&I war, the British were short of money and decided to pay off their war debt by taxing the Americans- directly, instead of asking for money from their legislatures... More
