What is an economic way to engage in volunteer work in Africa or South America without investing much money?

I would really like to go either to Africa or South America this summer. I would love to engage in any volunteer activities. There are lots of agencies on-line offering just that, however, most charge you several thousands just for a two-weeks placement plus air fare and other administrative fees. I would appreciate if someone can suggest a good no-cost or little cost way for foreign volunteer work. Thank you in advance.

Organizations that don't charge fees for volunteering, such as VSO Canada, UN Volunteers and the PeaceCorps are looking for people who can work (read, write and speak) in a language other than English, who have skills and experience that can lead to local people generating income, better feeding their families...
