How do I become a leader at work?

I don't seem to have the charisma or people skills that a good leader would have. How can I lead at work (office) without these innate qualities? I am quiet, and usually prefer to work alone, but I am—and can—be a great team player. I am also good at what I do. Currently I am #2 in my department at work (#1 has great people skills and charisma, and talks a lot.) I know a great leader brings out the best in other do they do it, and what should I be doing?

Start believing in yourself and start thinking like a leader. Read some literature on successful people you admire and you will get some great insight on what they did to achieve success.

Practice trying to look confident and people will think you are. Getting new clothes that make you look important should help you feel it too.

You can be a leader by letting your people see your not afraid to get your hands dirty. When I was a manager I never would ask my people to do something that I wouldn't do myself. Be approachable, let your people know they can come to you with any problem and you will help, not critiize.

Listen - Pay attention to your colleagues Think & Speak - See that you're not hurting sentiments of anyone. But, be assured that you can not please everyone. Smile - No matter who it is, just smile. It makes lot of difference. Be Mr. / Ms. Perfect - When you're able to do this, the world is all yours!
