How can you appreciate something with everything else around you?

Whenever I buy something, even spending a couple of hundred dollars on one item, I can't help but notice everything around me, and feel the "gimmies" creeping on me, and my hand reaching to my wallet. Its something that I try avoiding but it happens to be a mutual feeling and I even see my friends and family dealing with that. I know that this sometimes can lead to debt, especially for those who have no real sense of self-control. Is there a logical reason for his, and is there any way to avoid this?

When you feel that you must gratify the social "I" go out and volunteer to help others. You will find that you get more out of life when others are in your life... More
