Are police department standards to high?
I just finished watching the 12 o'clock news and once again they reported that the city is in need of over 800 more police officers. Yet many possible candiates are being turned away because they dont have a 2 year degree, or any military expierence. One man had a basic peace officer certification yet he was turned down because he did not a 2 year degree. And these people are finding jobs as police officers in other counties. Should the police department, if they need that many men start lowering their standards.

They need qualified police officers - not warm bodies. If a police department is that short of qualified officers then they need to check to see if their pay scale is competitive.

If they did not set high standards for them the streets would be patrolled with people who could not reason in an emergency situation, people would be getting shot needlessly, and there would probably be more dishonest cops on the street because of the low standards which hired them. The more... More

I believe this problem occurs in many cities. The standards might be too high for the pay being offered. You should always consider that it might not be the standards are high, but that the pay is too low... More

Most departments here in Florida only require high school diploma or equivalent and they do just fine. Cops get their training in the academy and on the street.
