I want to go for my masters in social work . Will it be hard to get a job as a school social worker?

I first wanted to be a school couselor but I want to work with younger kids and I hear its harder to find a school counseling job in elementary. Since you have many different options in social work I want to try that but will I have a good chance of finding a job in a school?

I don't think the masters degree will hinder your ability to find a job. However, you are correct, counseling jobs in schools are few and far between.

The best way to answer this question is to do a little research, because the area of the country you live in will be a big factor. Look at the local classifieds. Do you see any Masters level jobs for social workers in schools? If not, then yes, it will be hard.

THe district I worked at, the SW didnt really do counseling. They mostly worked at the Family Resource Centers, and they did home visits with the teachers/principles. But I know someplaces they assist the school psychologist in doing family assessments... More
