preventing a mild sore throat from getting worse?

My husband was sick for two days and he woke up saying he has a sore throat. Well I didn't have any symptoms but today I noticed my throat hurting a little and I'm getting worried because when I get a sore throat it will take about three days to get to the "worst" stage but when it does, it hurts so bad that I literally wake up from my sleep because of the pain. To a point where I can't swallow or even talk because it hurts so much. How do you prevent a sore throat from getting this bad?

Make sure you have a humidifier or something to put moisture into the air,, also if you think that you are getting a cold Zicam is a good otc medicine, also keep your body hydrated, gargling with salt water will help also.Hope this helps

As a pharmacist I would suggest trying zinc lozenges to see if this will relieve the initial symptoms. If the symptoms persist use the over the counter medicine Ziacam to alleviate and shorten the time to recovery
