Have you or anyone you known lost their job to a machine?

I am writing an English 200 paper for my university on automation, or the process of machinery replacing human labor, and its negative effect on the American job market. If you or someone you know believe they have lost their job to automation, whether its as simple as a grocery store clerk being replaced by a self-checkout, or as large as an auto worker being replaced by an assembly robot, please tell me your story and your feelings towards the issue. Thank you.

Not that I'm aware of but that doesn't mean much. I understand why businesses make these decisions. Businesses exist to make a profit. If they can earn more by automating more then that's what they will do. The decision to automate is an expensive decision because of the large costs upfront.
