How do employers and HR managers verify your education credentials?
I'm wondering if they call your alma mater to check that you've graduated. Or do they have some sort of database through which they run your name? If they call, who would they ask for that would have that information readily availiable?

I believe most of the time they call and verify. Edit: I've never been asked to furnish a copy of my transcripts to any job. I've worked for various size companies, and they do their own background checks, they don't ask for transcripts from the applicant.

By requiring you to furnish a copy of your transcript(s). A typical arrangement is that you can furnish an unofficial copy during the application process, but after you're hired you have to show an official copy (original, with the embossed seal on it).
