How do you find out if current employer is giving you a bad reference on current job seeking opportunities?

I have applied for three jobs within agency, and have been looked over for various reasons ( need someone with supervisory experience, etc.) I have recently applied for two jobs outside of our agency, but have not heard anything back from either.....not even contacted for an interview.

it may not be at all your old employer. I worked for HR a wile back and i can tell you that your resume is the first thing to get into the door. look over your resume and if you can have a professional look at it many community centers offer help in these matters for free. This is a tough job market right now in some areas, so it may just be that your resume has not come across as a top choice. Usually, a prospective employer will not contact your current employer until they have interviewed you and decided they like you. Could be same type scenario within your own agency... More

Have a friend that has a business call for a reference. Then you will know. Most employers will want to get rid of someone that is looking for another job.. Expect that to be next..

Usually your references aren't contact until after you have an actual interview and are being considered for the position. I do know agencies check references because I recently applied to one and they did.
