How exactly DID McCain grab the Republican nomination?

Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, James Dobson and many other prominent right-wing conservatives cannot stand this man. They claim that he is not a true Conservative and they despise his voting record in the Senate and call him a traitor. In my opinion, these people have a profound influence in the Conservative community. How exactly did McCain snatch the nomination without their support? Aside from the fact that many Conservatives see this man as a traitor, John McCain is also a war-lover. Don't get me wrong, I respect him for fighting for our country and I know that he was a POW. I commend him for that. But why would he want anyone else to go through that? The motives for this Iraq war are still ambiguous and I will not support this war until I get a clear definition as to why we are still there. But anyways, how did John McCain get the nomination?

For one thing, Huckabee's creationism garbage turned many science-loving Republicans off. (We're not all a bunch of religious right Bible-thumpers.) For another thing, Romney is even more liberal than McCain on some things. For a thing after that, Fred Thompson and that other guy just don't have the experience or... More

Right place at the right time. As the others (Giuliani, Romney, Huckabee) were falling toward the end, he was on the rise.

almost by default. other candidates did not appeal to the masses, and with poor approval ratings, the republican party could ill afford to nominate someone on the extreme right. the moderate appealed to the masses...the rest is history.

McCain got more votes than the other candidates so he got enough delegates to get the nomination. Republicans make McCain the nominee. Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, etc... DON'T run the RNC. They have no power regarding who gets the nomination. I'm not thrilled with McCain but he's the best we have!

the media handed it to him, by making sure he was the nominee, they gave another "close race" so everyone watches it.

i think the ann coulters, sean hannity's, and james dobsons are losing grip on the republican party. their very small but very vocal, rich, and powerful minority have ruled the party for the better part of 15 years. they are so far to the right that they have lost sight of the fact that most americans--republican or... Not enough people watched the debates.McCain was a name they knew.Huckabee won the debates hands down I guess they didn't want someone with that kind of intellect in the White House.

He won the votes of a loyal following Ann,and Sean are Conservatives and Far right on most issues. McCain is not far right but a moderate and needs to appeal to Dem and Rep the same to will the White House. Cross over voting from the Dem is minimal and why would they support a candidate that could win the White House... More
