How can I get health insurance with diabetes?

My boyfriend has Type 1 diabetes and just lost his job (and health insurance). We have been looking around for other health insurance, but basically no one will cover him because he takes insulin. If he continued with his job's health plan it would increase to over $500 a month! Our U.S. health care system sucks!! Do you know of any health care providers who would cover this? Thank you for all your great suggestions and advice! I love this Yahoo community. There are many caring and supportive people out there!

He can do COBRA (probably your $500 increase) and if he can't get on with another insurer and COBRA ends, he can use HIPAA to get on as a guarantor with another insurer--but it will cost a buttload for sure... More

Try Blue Cross Blue Shield. They accepted me after I was denied from another health insurance company. I have been on insulin most of my life and was surprised to find a company that does take those on insulin. Their rates depend on your age and they do have co-pays and deductibles, but they are a good insurance.

I suggest he look for a job that comes with health insurance. There are also protections for discrimination for health reasons if he was fired for becoming diabetic. I went to work for the Federal government because other employers would not hire me because of my diabetes(they didn't admit that)

He can go to the nearest state welfare office and apply for assistance. Part of that assistance is health care.

Many insurance companies will cover a diabetic. It just costs more and there are waiting periods of 1 to 2 years. (before the policy will cover anything concerning his diabetes.) Try to get some now, cause the older he gets, the harder it will be.
