What is it like to work in a battered mens'/womens' shelter?

As a volunteer. What do you know about it that you can tell me? Thanks. Working with Children and the battered parents...after a 40 hour workshop over the course of a month.

Working in a shelter for women and children as a volunteer is very rewarding. Yet don't expect all roses and positive feedback. It can be dangerous and you don't want to get too close to those you are there to help. They do have trust issues - so just let them know you care and are there to help and give support... More

This would depend on what capacity you would be volunteering. If you are their on an internship you would be working directly with the clients and facilitating groups, doing one on one counseling or working on goal setting, planning and intervention. If there are children at the shelter you may be doing simple games... More

Erin Pizzey, the founder of women's shelters has written a number of books about her actual experiences and you would find these invaluable. They are eye openers. (Incidentally, she has now just launched a campaign for the expansion of men's shelters.)
