How can I explain SKYPE to my class of 7 year olds?

My first graders have started exploring how communication methods are best suited for different purposes and audiences. We run an inquiry approach to learning and the children want to know how Skype works. Whilst they are off at the library and interviewing others, it was my job to ask on Yahoo! We would all really appreciate any help you can offer us.
