is it legal for an employer to demand that if your till is down, that you replace the money yourself?

I was aware when staring the job that till descrepencies over a £1 would be questioned and logged but our manager has recently told us that we must start to make the money up ourselves if our tills are down at the end of shift. Someone else has told me that this is illegal and I should refuse to pay it, can anyone settle this for me please?

sounds illegal to me, I suggest you speak to citizens advice but I would also check to see what is in your contract of employment - you may have agreed to do this.

It is illegal, but expect to be fired if you agrue about it. Why was your till short? Usually it means the worker is stealing
