What is the difference between an accountant and a bookkeeper?

accountant is a more professional term. some lawyers are accountants over family estates...while bookeepers are a lesser term. i would say degree vs certificate...and of course the pay..bookeeper=loan sharks=race tracks=street pharmascist=...

They each have different levels of responsibility. A bookkeeper handles the day to day data entry into the accounting system. An accountant performs the audit on the data and prepares the companies financial statements.
