I've been thinking about joining the military..which branch?

I'm in college right now..but i'm not motivated. not really trying my best in school..still live with my parents(i'm 21)....and I just really want to get out on my own and experience different things. I know for a fact that i want to see different parts of the world...asia and europe mostly. I understand that where ever they assign you that's where you go. But in you mind, which branch offers you the best opportunity to go overseas?

I was flunking out of UTEP when I joined the Army, but after a single winter rotation to CMTC Hohenfelds I never made anything but an A in a class -- for the next 16 years and 4 degrees. Muddy snow (or is it snowy mud) is a great way to put your life in perspective.

If you join the Army these days, you WILL go overseas at some point in your enlistment. There are large numbers of troops in Aisa (mostly Korea) and Europe (mostly Germany) and you can arrange for your first tour to be in either one of those. However -- those theaters are so mellow these days that the soldiers assigned to Korea and Germany are being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. So your two years in Germany might be six months in country followed by a year in Iraq, followed by another six months in Germany.

The Navy, by definition always goes overseas. Just make sure you are in an MOS (they call them ratings) that is a shipboard speciality. You will see the world. And you will hit all the high points. briefly. But in between those times in port you will be stuck in a ship with limited shower facilities and shared bunks. Watch out if you are claustrophobic. OTOH, if you don't mind being cramped, you really do see the world.

The Air Force maintains more bases in unusual places than any other service. In the right MOS you could find yourself in all sorts of unusual places. However, I recommend you avoid it. The Air Force is the service voted "most likely to be like a real job". They wear their hair long, fraternize too much, address their officers by first name -- it isn't the place you want to be if you are looking for something to motivate you. An internship at IBM would do the same for your motivation level -- and it will pay better.

I strongly suggest you avoid the Marines. If you have any sense of humility, shame or compassion for your fellow (non-Marine) man you will not fit in. You have to want to drink their Kool-Aid for the Marine Corps to be a good fit for you. Since you don't know which branch you want, you obviously haven't drank it.

I suggest the Army (Hooah!) or the Navy. Both have their pluses and minuses. If you want to see Central Europe, Korea, the Mid-East and Central Asia, the Army is your game. If exotic beach locals are your thing, stick with the Navy.

Thanks for being willing to serve and I hope you have a great time. Remember, it is what you make it, so keep a good attitude and you will have a wonderful time.

The easiest and best branches are the air force, you can be fat and lazy and get paid. The army , you pick up rank fast,
the navy but you'll be out on ship most of the time, or the MARINES they will work your ass off but you'll be proud to call yourself a MARINE and have people look up to you and call you a hero.OORAH!

Air Force-after you can use the training in civilian life depending on which job you choose.

It's about equal w/ each branch. now you should be looking at which branch will give you the best job opportunities w/i and allows you to get better jobs when you come out. i would say air force. my best friend and her husband have both been stationed in england, as well as state-side. they have also gone to the middle east, asia, central europe, south america.

Man, I know exactly how to feel. Personally, I'm going Army, but if want to see the world... aside from Baghdad or Kabul, then I'd probably go Navy. Beyond that, do some serious research into the military and everything that's going on before you toss yourself into this mess. That show on PBS, Carrier, about the Navy was pretty good, might wanna check that out on the side.

Army and Marrines can take you on a non stop flight to affganistan, iran, or iraq. Air force and army are big in germany and europe, Navy best to travel, select a field which has sea duty, I was on the USS Midway for 6 years saw 16 diff countries. If you want motivation go marrines they'll motivate you really quick. Army blah, Air Force lives the good life blah. Then you have the coast guard hahaha won't see foriengn countries but get to see lots of b*********e. Good luck in your choice.

Wow! there are really a bunch of misinformed, or unpatriotic, or all the the above idiots up in here. First, thanks for your patriotism and even considering even enlisting. To answer your question, they've all got their advantages and perks.

Marines are definitely the most intense. Their PT test is the most grueling as well. I was a Navy brat growing up and living by the water always seemed great. If you plan on staying single for a while it's fine. Otherwise that sea duty can be a killer on a family.

Army and Air Force bases tend to be in the same regions. In the US, they can send you to random places like Kentucky or Kansas (no offense to people from there) but the Air Force is known to being the least intensive. You mention Asia and Europe and you can defnitely be stationed there in the Army or Air Force. The Navy used to have bases in Scotland and Italy and I know Scotland is closed and I think Italy is too. and the navy used to have a base in the Phiippines but that's closed too. Whereas in the Air Force and Army you could be stationed in Italy, Germany, Japan, and Korea to name a few. Germany is especially BEAUTIFUL AND SOOOO CLEAN!

The real beauty is there is a lot of bonus money going out now. And also, you have to do your research and know how to negiotiate with your recruiter and read your contract throughly. Nowadays you could basically tell them, "I won't sign unless I get Germany" and they will find you a base in Germany (there are hundreds). There is no guarntee you'll be there forever tho and you could be there for a few months then get shipped off to Iraq. You're Housing allowance and Cost of Living allowance is definitely more in some places than others so if you get somewhere like Europe especially, you can pocket some good $$$. For all those tree huggers telling you you could do the same thing on a family vacation, get real! Especially if you're already in Europe, you can see the entire continent for so much cheaper. Sign up for three years (i think that's the minimum) and see if you like it. The Veterans benefits of that alone make it worth it. Good luck!

PS: Finish college too. You can enlist as an E-4. Maybe if you like it even put your officer packet together!

Overseas? Navy or Marines Corps. Navy because that's what they do and Marine Corps because that's what they do and they're also small. The Commandant of The Marine Corps has stated that ALL Marines will do a tour in either Iraq or Afganistan.

Other than that, it all depends on what you want out of your service time. I did 4 years in The Marines and I hated and loved it at the same time, if that makes sense.

Other Career Questions

Once I graduate high school, I'm not entirely sure what I want to do, but I do know that I want to help people, especially through humanitarian work. I'm also considering joining the military, so my question is what are some military jobs that involve helping people? I would especially like to help with civilians in the area where I'm deployed, regardless of where that is, or what that may entail. So, if anyone has any career suggestions, advice, or other information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Recently I have overlooked for a project at work and I am unable to accept it why? I am hard working, dedicated, maintain a very professional decorum, very cordial with my colleagues and bosses, give respect to one and all. Still people who take the p***, argue with managers, gossip mongers have been selected for some very responsible positions at work. I seriously can't get my head around it why, why unprofessional people who have no work ethics being selected over me, whereas I have a track record of excellent performance and never shy away from any work my manager ask me to do? I am at my lowest point and not getting hold of my manager to ask the question why not me, why them who can't even bother? I am feeling like a complete loser, giving years to this place, building my performance, trust and this is how I get rewarded. Why my life is so shit, anything I wish for turns to dust?

So today I went in for an interview and I was going in for the 2nd interview by the head chief executive. now this is where it got weird, so she asked me about my previous jobs and said how much she liked that product over that product. then she started talking about her daughter? an her divorce ...then how she didn't finish college because she was making more money doing what she did for this company ... then she talked about how her teenage daughter is a handful... I just played it cool thinking she was using some sort of psychology thing to trick me into saying something stupid. the interview ended and she seemed happy an I was escorted to the door... now I'm freaking confused? is this normal behavior for an executive? like it felt like she was going to burst into tears at one point and tell me her life problems... is this normal? was she trying to see how I react or something?

Basically- no degree, although I have tried completing one in the past and stopped because of physical and mental health issues which were overwhelming to deal with along with going to classes full time. I'm not stupid and I am quite articulate. I am 23 and have only worked for about two years retail in high school and stopped working to go to university. I worked a few months in 2010 retail after I dropped out but it was only a seasonal position, and the only reason why I have not been able to constantly work is because of mental health issues. I had also tried going back to community college during my free time since i left university in 2008/9 and I had panic attacks while in community college, which made my anxiety worse from then on. Well recently I met a good doctor and he prescribed me some meds that are stabilizing my moods and I feel the best I've felt in years, and I'm ready to work. Thing is, I don't know how to get a job now since I've spent literally years being depressed and anxious doing nothing. I don't really have anything to put on my resume, and I never finished my AA degree either. All I've done is cashiering and although I do the job well and I get promoted easily when I do these jobs because I'm a hard worker and I try to go above and beyond what they ask of me,which is the attitude I have no matter what kind of work I'm doing as long as I'm getting paid. But I hate cashiering because it's too easy and I want a job that is more interesting. Any suggestions for me on how to get a job that is NOT Retail with the type of background I have right now? I also realize I have to go to college to get certain types of jobs, I am talking about what I can do right here right now.

So I have a nice white button up shirt, business skirt and pants, and a suit jacket. I'm applying for a software development job and I'm very short and can look young so I'm trying to look adult, yet professional. I'm also attractive so I'm trying not to look too sexy. For the career fair I'm thinking of wearing just my nice shirt and a skirt with low heels. My reasoning being it's approachable and attractive without going overboard since the career fair hosts are mostly younger male recent grads. I want to be remembered but not intimidating. For my interviews I was thinking pants, suit jacket (power suit). My reasoning being it'll be older execs and HR people (mostly women) so less sexy with the pants but more powerful with the suit jacket. What do you think?!
