Why persist with the practice of tipping at restaurants ?

It hurts everyone except waiters and waitresses that are likeable and attractive to the opposite sex. Tipping turns them into contractors, sacrifices long term stability and professionalism into higher amount of short term cash. Not to mention plain unfair on the untipped restaurant staff and workers in other industries with much lower salaries. Why are people telling me about the token *wage* a waiter recieves, it is insignificant compared to the tips they recieve ? As is the minimum wage paid to most other workers in restaurants.

Restaurants could raise their food prices and pay servers a flat rate. That would hurt the restaurant since their menu prices would look higher then their competitors. It would also reduce the quality of service people got when they ate there. I deal with a lot of demanding rude people all day. It takes a lot of... More

Because waitresses and waiters work hard usually for less than minimum wage, their income depends almost solely on tips, and if you were a waiter or waitress getting paid 3 dollars an hours, you would want your tips. Almost everyone tips equally to a good server, attractive or not, and if they don't, they're s******s... More

Unfair to untipped staff with lower salaries? In Illinois, I don't know what the current hourly rate is for wait staff, but several years ago it was less than half of the minimum wage. If noone tips wait staff, they make about $2-3 per hour. Kitchen staff on regular minimum wage make far more than that.

As a former waitress, I made 2.13 an hour. I had to make tips to make up for the other 3.02 that I wasn't making. Minimum wage in Mississippi was 5.15. If the tips earned exceed the amount I would've made on the min. wage scale, then I didn't get paid. So it all works out. It also goes hand in hand with sales. Think... More

Why do people bring up a food servers pay? Because it is relevant to the point you are trying to make. You say that it is unfair to other staff in the resturant who are not tipped and get pain minimum wage. The thing is food servers are taxed on their tips, so basically anytime they are tipped under 10% they are... More
