How can I convince a prospective employer that I can do an accounting type job without an accounting degree?
I have my degree in Elementary Education and I don't have any experience in accounting nor my accounting degree, but I know I could easily be a bookkeeper. What skills are employers really looking for in a bookkeeper, accounts payable, etc.? Or do I just need to get my degree? I do have experience creating purchase orders and invoicing...does that help?

P.O.'s and invoicing helps with an a/r position. To get experience in an a/p position, someone will have to take a chance on you. Another helpful skill is general ledger. It's all part of book keeping. Throw some payroll in there, and you can get a job without a degree. I did.

you'd have to have some accounting education and work experience - if you can get a temp agency to give you try as an AP clerk (you would probably get tested at keyboard and possibly some bookkeeping basic questions) - it would help
