social work??

i'm 16 and i'm leaving school this year. i have decided that what ever i do i'm going to do an apprenticeship.I've always wanted to be a social worker. I want to help find housing for people and help them with other financial needs. I was told to do an apprenticeship in health and social care. When went into the training centre i was told that i'll have to work in a residential home; however i don't want to work their for my placement. What shall i do?? can you do an apprenticeship in heath and social care in the council???? please help.
