How can a presidential candidate help americans decrease their oil consumption within the next 10years?

I only hear bad news about oil. Maybe more money should be invested for research for alternative forms of energy. If we decrease our 20million barrel per day oit habit as quickly as possible then we are less likely to suffer from oil problems. Will americans continue using 20million barrels of oil per day until a terrorist attack or a global shortage happens? When will the USA do what's best and stop using 20million barrels?

Increasing our energy efficiency will do far more to save Americans money, to reduce our dependence on foreign sources, and can generate new jobs and industries. Trim the fat and waste. US has 3% of the worlds oil reserves, we use 25%. You can't drill 3% into 25%.

Crowd them into inner city ghettos near whatever jobs there are. Oops, they tried that in the 60s and crime soared.

No president can do more than make arguments and support bills in congress that would lessen our dependence on oil. I fully agree that more research into alternatives is a basic requirement. It is just plain good economics to have competing products.

The government needs to spend more money on expanding mass transporatation and alternative energies. Mass transportation has been a blessing for me since gas approached $4 a gallon

Roll the speed limits back to 55 again, reducing your speed by 10 mph you will save 20-30% per tank full. How many times have you seen a 10mpg Hummer fly by on the highway at 80 mph? I live in Oklahoma and drive a CNG bifuel car (compressed natural gas). It uses CNG which in Oklahoma costs 90 cents a gallon and when it... More

no more buses to the schools. let kids walk. no more parents driving kids to schools. let kids walk to school. that would also make the kids healthier and take sooo many cars off the road and clear up morning and afternoon traffic.

Get out of the way and let the free market work. When gas prices are high people drive less. When alternative energies are economically feasable, either through rising oil prices or advanced technologies that lower the cost of alternatives, capitalist will invest their private monies to take advantage of the demand... I agree with many of the above answers. We need to let oil prices soar so people will stop driving SUV's and just decrease their energy consumption in general. Also, more public transit!
