I am a Microsoft .Net Developer and want to get into contracting?

I have been a developer for about 10 years and I have a Software Engineering degree and am just about to finish my MCPD Enterprise exams. I have always been employed as a full time employee but I want to go solo and become a contractor. What is the best place to start and where can I get the rates I deserve without being tied to or ripped off by an agency?
