How do I get female betta fish ready to mate?

The male is ready and he built a huge bubble nest; they were separated, etc. I read all precautions and directions. Then I introduced the girl to him. She started flaring at him and then he started swimming around her and she started chasing him. Then he nipped at her and she freaked out and swam away and keeps hiding; I think he took the hint because he left her alone after that and then I just moved her back to her tank. How do I get her to show vertical stripes and be ready to mate?
