Moving to California and need some advice on the best areas!?

I currently live in upstate NY near Rochester. I'm 25 and I've recently decided to move out west. The job market here is awful and I think with a degree in marketing, I'll have plenty more opportunity out there. I've been thinking about southern Cali, but I'm not sure of the best towns or cities. I know it's expensive, so if I'm close enough to a major city without actually being in the heart, that would be best. Any suggestions?
