So, is it better that Toyota makes cars here with the profits going out? Or that GM makes cars in Mexico..?

I have been reading a little about the auto industry situation. I am trying to understand which is more harmful/helpful. Is it better(or more harmful) for the US economy that Toyota and others are providing jobs for workers even though the profits are going to Japan? Or is it better(or more harmful) that American auto manufacturers are outsourcing the jobs and the profits come back to the US? Just based on that it seems that the Toyota situation is actually more helpful. Anyone know more about this?
