I recieved a summons for a medical debt but I have no $...What should I do?

So I got a summons this morning for an unpaid medical debt in the amount of $2000. I don't have a job. I don't have any money. I don't have any assets. I don't plan on paying this debt. What are my options?

From a lawyer. Don't listen to non-lawyers. This is a civil matter and under no circumstances will you go to jail. All that can happen is that they will get their judgment against you and then they won't be able to collect it. One day your ship may come in and then you might have to pay it. If you don't show up, you'll probably have a warrant for your arrest. Call legal aid in your city.

You cannot get arrested in any state in the Country for not paying a debt. We do not have debtor prisons, they went out hundreds of years ago... More

You cannot be arrested for owing medical bills (or any other debt not related to criminal charges or traffic citations). The worst that can happen is a judgment will be entered against you and if you DO get a job, they can garnish your wages.
