How did they get the words on to the pages of books in the 1940s?

What technique did they use to put words on to the page in books in the 1940s, and what was the title given to the person who did it. Was it a high-paying job?

Scribes used to get very well paid for putting words on pages, but then that darned Gutenberg had to come up with the printing press. Put them all out of business. j/k. Do you mean typesetters? Stenographers? (We still have those now)
