My dog keeps on licking his paws untill the skin gets damaged?

He is a toy poodle, a little over a year old. He just licks them like mad untill it bleeds. There isn't anything on it but he keeps licking it. What should I do?

See your vet. The dog has an allergy. My dog is allergic to grass and cannot tolerate newly cut lawns. There are medications which can help and booties to help his pads to heal.

My westie terrier does the same thing, he's been chewing and licking his infected paws for a year now. we had a cone on his head but he managed to break it. We found out that feeding your dog human food like bacon, sausage or processed sandwich meat can actually cause the bad skin so if you feed your dog stuff like... More

You need to go to the vets, it sounds like allergy's and will need medication. My dog had the same thing was allergy to grass and dust mites. Your dog will be in a lot of pain if he is bleeding.

The first step in solving any behavior problem is to make an appointment with your vet. It's possible your dog is struggling with an unseen health issue. You may not find any sign but, there's really something that's bothering him. Take him to the vet to find out. Here's a link that might help you find out more about him.

It's an anxiety thing. I know this because my mum has a 9 year old poodle who doe's the same thing. they get very attached to their owners. and lick it like crazy. ask ur vet about it and how to stop him doing it.

Check to make sure the nails are damaged of have any cracks in them. My Jack/Chi Bailey was doing this and when we took him to the vet it ended up being his thumb nail (not sure what the doggy equivlent is lol) was torn. Dogs have a natural way of trying to heal themselves. The vet ended up taking the nail out and it... More

You can find a spray at pet supply stores to spray on the area. It tastes awful. There are more than one brand, I use "Bitter Taste" by Bio-Groom. If my dog starts licking, all I have to say is "I'll get the spray" and he will stop.

He's probably licking them because they're itchy, and they're probably itchy because he's licked them raw - it's a vicious circle. You'll just have to keep constant attention and stop him as and when he does it, there is no miracle cure. (That being said if it does persist, then do see the vet as others have mentioned... More
