questions about fuel economy?

1.) for the stop/start devices that are being installed in many fuel efficient vehicles, wouldn't that just wear out the higher priced starter at a rate many times faster than a normal one, and cost you more in labor in parts than gas savings? 2.) instead of using a cylinder shut off system why don't auto manufacturers use better materials for engine components, which could gain from higher build quality as well, while possibly destroking, better balancing it, or design different emissions packages for each state? the mpg gains would be more along with a more responsive and higher output engine. the initial cost would be higher, but the consumer would get more for their money and be better off in the long run. 3.) why are only companies involved in racing openly developing kers? 4.) why don't they make lighter vehicles and make vehicles that barely meet safety regulations for better performance and fuel economy. satisfying every crowd with one vehicle is impossible. 5.)why is the majority of fuel efficient vehicles hideous. they can get just as good of drag coefficient with better looks, or do they make them ugly to keep insurance costs down?
