As a Navy Delayed Entry Program (DEP) loss, can I still join the Navy in the future?

I was set to ship out in July 2007 but I didn't leave on my ship date. I left the recruiters a message stating my dad was ill and I wasn't leaving for training. I also wrote a letter. My dad passed away a couple months later and I went back to college. Next Summer I will have my associates degree and I will likely be looking to join the military again. Can I rejoin the Navy?

You can still join but as mrsjvb stated, you will need a waiver. This waiver will not be as simple as one might be led to believe. However, your circumstances seem favorable. A few mitigating factors to consider are (1), how close to your shipping date were you before you jumped ship; (2) did your failure to ship create a gap that the Recruiting Station was unable to fill; and (3) was your parting in any way unpleasant with the local recruiting sub-station. These could all way against you. In your favor is your honest desire to serve your country. Would you be willing to give up something in the negotiation process regarding the job that you will take and ship date in exchange for favorable consideration? Might not be necessary to play those cards early, but hold'em. They could be your trumps later.

I recommend that you prepare a brief essay for the Commander of the applicable RS advising them of the circumstances and see what happens. If you are in an area that is not doing so well in meeting recruiting mission requirements, you shouldn't have any problem. If you are in an area where the Navy is flourishing (like Southern California), get ready to play some of those cards.

Good Luck!

I do not see why not. Until you get to MEPS and sign the contract nothing is set. So you never really joined the military to begin with. If you are messed with by the Navy then try another branch but they should have no issues!

The only thing you get here are opinions... unless you happen to get a recruiter. That's where I'd go were I you.

The advantage of an AA degree is that you'll get to graduate from boot camp as an E-3 instead of E-2. If I remember, I think that gives you about six months jump on the guys without the degree.

I think I'd go to the trouble to make an appointment with a recruiter. Not too many bother. Take with you copies of the correspondence to which you referred. Explain that you still want to join, but have taken the opportunity to get an AA degree in the mean time. It shows interest, drive, an even a little dedication.

You might get a little static for having left the program once before. Processing applicants isn't free. But, if you play our cards right, I can't see any problem.

I went in at 20 with a BA. I think I went in as an E-3. But I'm not sure. I'd passed my E-6 test within 4 years and was about to extend for First Class, and somebody dusted off my degree and recommended me for OCS. I was in for 25 years. But that was my experience.

Other Career Questions

Once I graduate high school, I'm not entirely sure what I want to do, but I do know that I want to help people, especially through humanitarian work. I'm also considering joining the military, so my question is what are some military jobs that involve helping people? I would especially like to help with civilians in the area where I'm deployed, regardless of where that is, or what that may entail. So, if anyone has any career suggestions, advice, or other information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

I was reading and it said that 95% of military jobs are open to women, and I am afraid one of them may be something I would like to do. And about the Navy SEAL thing, I just want to be a hero.. So, yeah..
