Can you encapsulate Iron Keels with fiberglass?
I have a 1970 twin keeled Westerly Centaur and would like to cover the cast-iron keels in firberglass to reduce maintenance, provide a smoother underwater surface and better bottom paint adhesion. Is this a good idea?

Probably not. It will be very hard to get a permanent interface between the two materials. If you have cast iron then two choices that may work are first ferrocement http://www.ferroboats.com/ with epoxy over or maybe epoxy paste or similar. the only problem is it could refuse to stay on unless you gave it somethig to grip like holes in the plate.what would you do to seal the join?and prevent the existing keel bolts from rusting through.

If you grind it to bare metal and seal it with epoxy then glass with Polyester resin & fiberglass> If it's bleed rust than No it won't stick?it will blister>
