What's the worse that could happen if the Dow keeping dipping lower and lower?

The Dow Jones just dipped below 8000 points a few moments ago. The bailout package is not working obviously, so what is the worse possible and/or likely scenarios to ensue? What does this mean for the lower class of America and all over the world? Also, what causes the Dow to fall, and why is it so important to us all? If it isn't that important why is it the only thing being watched by so many people? And the only thing Economics professors are talking about?
