Do mechanical engineers or other engineers get to actual tinker with things?

I haven't been able to find an answer so here is another engineering topic. I plan on becoming a mechanical or mechatronics engineer, but want to know if the majority of their job is desk-work. I don't mind some, but I would really like to go hands on, invent, tinker, and play with machines. If you watched Ironman i'd kinda like to be like Stark. By that i mean able to play with different mechanical exponents and make awesome things (not neccessarily unrealistic suits of armor, but other cool gadgets)

Most of your work will be desk work, design, producing working drawing, overseeing work using your design and attending meetings. You only get to invent and tinker on your own time.

You might want to look into becomming a test engineer rather than a designer. A mechanical designer is probably going to spend MOST of his time in front of a computer creating diagrams and doing calculations. Building computer models of actual things.

The engineer does mostly design work and the tinkering is left mostly to the technicians. As an engineer, there is nothing to prevent you from "getting your hands dirty" if you want to.
