Where can I get trained in custom metal fabrication and welding?

I want to get metalworking and welding certifications so I can chop cars and fabricate parts. I know a lot of people will suggest tech schools like UTI or Wyotech, but I really feel like that won't get me the high level skills I want to work to achieve. I am considering the sheet metal workers union training facility here in Chicago, but I'm not really sure thats the right direction either. I'd like to stay local, but I'll take any suggestions of course.
