Why is religion so tied up with politics in America?

It's not really an issue here in the UK, which I think is a good thing. I am a Christian but feel my political beliefs are my own business and nothing to do with my faith. I vote for who I believe will do the best job for my country and nothing else. Why is religion so important in politics in America?
