What's a prospective photographer to do?
I don't know where to go or what to do. I feel like everyone else has it so easy, that everyone else already knows what college they want to attend. So many photographers in this world, what makes me so different? I have such an open mind and heart for photojournalism and I want to help bring awareness to people across the globe, but I feel that I am stupid and ignorant of the world around me. I can't afford a better lens for my camera, I can't find anyone who would like a photo shoot, I can't find anything. Now, don't get me wrong....its not that I'm lazy and stubborn and I want to remain in ignorant bliss for the rest of my life, I am just simply SCARED. I fear so much, that's why I don't want to do anything. I don't know how to go out there, get myself known, or find the connections I need. I am nobody, and I feel like I will always be a nobody for the rest of my life. I can't talk to anyone about this. I've tried my mom, my counselor, my teacher, my boyfriend.......nobody gets it. Mom just always concludes that something is wrong with me, instead of trying to help me find a solution... My counselor does not listen to me when I speak, and tries to get me to go to UC's when I CLEARLY tell her that that is not what my plan is. My teacher is just in his own world, literally. He doesn't even know what to tell me. My boyfriend just concludes that I am too selective of my school choices...well that doesn't help me either. I've been researching and researching for schools that offer a brilliant photojournalism course. I know of Ohio and Missouri, but I don't know if I could possibly afford living out there. Maybe I am too specific on what I want. I would love to take a photojournalism course that is balanced between knowing the business and how it works, and working on the creativity as well. I was recently accepted to Brooks Institute, but I have a VERY fishy feeling about them. It's all about money for them, and they don't return calls when they say they will. I've done so many reviews on so many schools, and Brooks did not have too good of feedback. So far, my plan is to attend community college in the spring while finishing my senior year of high school, and take an advanced photo course and perhaps a journalism course as well. Does this seem decent? I really must sound so naive, but I really don't know who to turn to for advice at this point. I am so motivated to reach my dream, yet I am so far from it because of my fear. I know I must overcome this, but I feel like once I have a stable ground under my feet, aka, knowing what will lie ahead in school and such, perhaps I can then move on. I've been thinking about calling my local newspaper and offering help, but I don't know how to go about that. Any tips and tricks would be very helpful for me. Thank you. P.S. Here is my flickr link. I must tell you ahead of time, that this is NOT my portfolio. If anyone out there really knows their photography & has had experience, I would be willing to show my actual portfolio for some good critique. Thanks. http://www.flickr.com/photos/quitekarina/

I would aim for Mizzou, I'm from St. Louis and have heard of its amazing photoj program for years. A lot of my friends go there (not for photoj) and they all seem to enjoy it. Do you have a flickr link? I wouldn't mind giving you critique on your photos, though I'll warn you I'll be harsh. :)
