Working for NASA vs. private sector?

Hey all, I'm currently a mechanical engineering undergrad and I have a goal of eventually working in the spaceflight/aerospace sector. I'm around a point where I'm starting to look at internships and co-op options. So which area would be better to work at: NASA/govt or somewhere in the private sector like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, or maybe even one of the more space oriented companies like Armadillo or Virgin Galactic? Not only specifically for interning, but what about later down the road when I'm looking for a career with a company? Is one area any better than the other as far as salary, benefits, etc, go? If you've worked for any aerospace organization please let me know what you thought, pros, cons. Any regrets on the decisions you made? Again, I'm just looking for some preliminary info to help make some decisions in the future so whatever info you have will probably be helpful. Thanks!
