providing evaluation, testing, diagnoses, treatment and healing care of patients with emotional, behavioral, and mental diseases or disorders.
Psychologists might work in group or private practices, or in hospitals, clinics, schools, and other institutions. Some Psychologists
might also work for private industry, providing businesses with insights and assistance in human behavior and human resources related issues.
Psychologists typically study the normal Medical School topics of anatomy, physiology, physics, chemistry, and the like. In addition, Psychologists specialize in studies of the mind; and how the mind and body interact and are integrated with one another; and how the mind and brain and thinking processes work; and why people behave in certain ways under certain circumstances; and other similar areas of study.
Psychologists also study and train in interviewing and counseling procedures, problem identification and mitigation, and other similar subject areas.
Those Psychologists who choose to work in educational settings (schools, colleges, universities) should be educated in specific-to-youth areas of study as well.
Psychologists must, of course, be personable and approachable, since their work usually involves direct communication with patients. Psychologists must also be highly trustworthy and non-judgemental, since they often become familiar with very personal patient emotional issues and behavioral phenomena.
Of course, those Psychologists who opt for their own private practice should be educated in proper business operations as well.
In most states, Psychologists are not allowed to administer or prescribe medications. Psychiatrists and other medical physicians
must prescribe any drugs to be used for behavioral or emotional treatments and healing-care procedures.
