How important is higher education when dropouts hold the CEO jobs?
What's it worth? (I wonder about it every time I read about Steve Jobs, Michael Dell, Paul Allen, Bill Gates, Lawrence Ellison, etc.)

These examples are few and far between. This is not the norm. There are always exceptions, but for the majority of people you need an education to get ahead. They are exceptional cases. They are all brilliant people who were entrepreneurs. Not many people fall into that category.

true. but you answered your own question sort of. you can name those who dropped out and made it big. there are only a handful of those people compared to those who drop out and get nowhere. a degree might be worth a lot of money and time, but they always give you a better security of getting a job than dropping out...
