What to feed my Garter Snake?

Note: Please answer only if you have experience. I got a new Gartner snake and I do NOT want to feed him mice! Is it really that important to keep these in their diet? Its also my understanding that they do not feed off of these normally in the wild. A few things I will feed him are: Worms Fish (maybe) Commercial diets Fish Fillets I also wanted to know if I can feed him fruits and veggies? I feed that to my other reptiles all of the time.

Garters, in the wild, will eat amphibians, but since you probably don't want to feed your snake frogs and toads, I would feed a varied diet of fresh whole fish, earthworms, and waxworms. Also, all snakes are strictly carnivorous, none will eat fruits and vegetables.

When garters are young, an earthworm diet is best. You can offer an occasional minnow or other small fish, but an all fish diet will harm and possibly kill your snake due to a severe vitamin deficiency. They will also take tadpoles, salamanders, small frogs, slugs. They do not eat insects or any fruit or veggies...ever... More
