Are auto mechanics satisfied with their jobs?

I'm considering trying to become an auto mechanic, but first, a few questions are in order. Is the environment in which you work very noisy? Is it relatively safe? For how long did you have to go to school to become a mechanic? Would you say you make enough money? And finally, how satisfied are you with your job?

union jobs are going the way of the dinosaur. only non-union and less paid mech jobs out there. no one can afford dealers prices. non0union means a dirty, noisy place to work, not well heated or cooled.
